Book Review: Black Boy Joy edited by Kwame Mbalia

Stories of black joy so masterfully put together, that you will forget you are reading a book. A mix of prose and verse will remind you of all the joy that can be found in the world.

This book is joy. The characters range from queer, gay, and straight and shed light on the unique experience of black boyhood. The stories are incredibly relatable and often start with a challenge or struggle such as the loss of someone important or making sure their first day of school outfit is perfect. Each author's distinct voice and style of writing, including a precious and heartfelt story in verse, show how boyhood is both universal and unique.

" There are many examples of strong family connections and community support. Most of the contributions are prose, but the compilation includes a graphic story as well as one in verse. There is variety in tone and style: Some are humorous, some are poignant, but all are compelling reading. The length of the stories makes them ideal for discussion and student responses." -Kirkus Review

A unique, timely, and necessary read.
