Book Review: Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Once upon a time there was a girl who was part... cyborg. Cinder is unique in her appearance even if she is only a second hand citizen. Soon strange this begin occurring after she meets a mysterious stranger in her metal working shop and she is thrust into a political landscape she was not ready for.

Cinder is a strong and sassy character who uses her quick wit to help her navigate her environment that is not always so kind. This story is wonderful because while it feels new and interesting you still get the sense of the base material, Cinderella, throughout the new age tale. Along with Cinder, there are a whole cast of loveable side characters like her friend, Iko and love interest, Kai.

"Cinder’s personal tenacity and skill, as well as Meyer’s deft application of "Cinderella" nuggets—Cinder’s ill-fitting prosthetic foot (loseable on palace steps); a rusting, obsolete car colored pumpkin-orange—are riveting. Diluting them is a space-fantasy theme about mind-controlling Lunars from the moon, which unfortunately becomes the central plot. A connection between Cinder’s forgotten childhood and wicked Lunar Queen Levana is predictable from early on. Despite the simplistic and incongruous-feeling telepathic-enslaver theme, readers will return for the next installment in this sharp, futuristic "Cinderella" tale." - Kirkus Review
